Hamilton City Council makes decisions that impact the future of our city and the well-being of Hamiltonians every day. We do a lot to keep the city running the way it should. We provide and maintain water services, make sure waste is disposed of safely, and plan and deliver for the future of our growing city… and that’s just the start. The scale of what we do is massive and it’s the drive and passion of our team that make it happen.

Working with Council, you’ll have the chance to impact the city, embrace challenges, and grow your career as part of our high-performing team. We’re made up of more than 1200 staff spread across more than 20 sites, but we’re united by a common purpose – to improve the wellbeing of Hamiltonians.

This is your opportunity to develop and grow your career and be a part of our exciting graduate programme.

This programme runs for two years with new recruits starting with Council in February 2023.

We are looking for recent graduates or students in their final year of study who are passionate, enthusiastic, and driven – ready to learn and thrive in development and career.  We offer the opportunity to learn from the best while developing your skills and experience when you have been appointed a permanent role here in the Growth Funding and Analytics Unit.

During your first month, you will participate in a robust orientation programme that will set you up to succeed.  You will be set up with a buddy and a non-technical mentor to ensure you are well supported during the two-year programme. These roles are part of a wider Graduate programme that will give you the opportunity to stay connected with your fellow graduates across other areas of the Council.

You will have a qualification in Public Policy, Statistics, Economics or computer science, and be ready to put that theory into practice.

Application Process

Ready to apply and make your mark on our city? You will need:

  • A cover letter
  • Your CV
  • Your academic transcript

Everyone who applies to our graduate programme will be kept informed of their application’s progress via email or phone.

If you are selected as a short-listed graduate you will undergo:

  • Psychometric profiling – this is to check that your values and knowledge align with Council and its business needs.
  • Phone interview – this is an initial conversation to get to know you and a chance for you to ask questions.
  • Panel Interview – this will incorporate both interview questions and a 20-minute presentation.

What are you waiting for? The start of your career journey with us maybe just a few clicks away!

Making the customer feel comfortable and giving good suggestions to them if something went wrong and working along with them to correct things will make me think I am doing my role in the right way.

As a building review officer, it is a big responsibility since we are the ones who see those plans and make sure that all of the parts of the structure are compliant with the building code.
