How to stand out in Transgrid's graduate recruitment process

Transgrid

Navigating the graduate recruitment process can be daunting, especially when you’re applying for the same roles as many of your classmates. With the right approach, you can make a lasting impression.

Here are some key strategies to help you stand out:

Step 1: Application process

At this stage, you will submit a cover letter and resume, as well as answer a few short questions.

To stand out at this stage, it’s crucial to always include a tailored cover letter and provide detailed and thoughtful responses to any short answer questions asked. Ensure your application is free from spelling and grammar errors by thoroughly checking it and having a friend or family member review it. Avoid using the same resume and cover letter for all your graduate applications; tailoring each application is essential to make a strong impression and get to the next stage.

Completing additional certifications related to your area of interest can also set you apart. Make sure you keep your LinkedIn profile up to date and regularly post about your achievements. Lastly, make your resume clean, simple, and concise (2-3 pages max), using consistent font and size, and avoid including photos.

If you know a current employee at Transgrid, we encourage you to reach out to them and ask questions about Transgrid, their role, and the role that you are applying for.

As you progress through the stages, it is important to thoroughly read all communications sent from Transgrid, as this will prepare you to put your best foot forward.

Step 2: Screening process

Next, the Transgrid team will review each application, cover letter and resume thoroughly, and consider a variety of aspects such as academic achievements, relevant work experience, extracurricular activities and volunteer work. This is the stage where all your work on your application will benefit you!

Step 3: Online assessment

If you are successful in the screening stage, you will be invited to complete an online assessment. To stand out during online assessment, ensure you are well-prepared by practicing common assessment questions and familiarising yourself with the format.

Ensure you are in a quiet area with no distractions as these assessments are often timed.

Read all instructions carefully and ensure you have all relevant equipment with you, which may or may not include a calculator.

Step 4: One-way video interview

If you pass the benchmark for online assessment, you will then be invited to complete a one-way video interview.

Ensure you are well-prepared by practicing popular interview questions and using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method. Practice recording yourself responding to these questions to identify areas for improvement.

During video interviews, dress professionally and choose a quiet, well-lit and clean location. Speak clearly and confidently, maintaining eye contact with the camera to create a connection. Avoid using AI generated responses or reading your responses from your screen as this comes across as disingenuous and unnatural. If you want to standout, you don’t want to have the same answer as everyone else!

Review the company’s values and culture beforehand to align your responses accordingly. Lastly, be mindful of your body language and stay calm and composed throughout the process.

Step 4: Interview and assessment

If you are shortlisted from the one-way video interview stage, you will then be invited to Graduate Assessment Centre.

If you are invited to the assessment centre, you will also be invited to an information session before the assessment to give you information you need to prepare and gives you a chance to ask any questions you have about this stage.

In the weeks before the interview to prepare, we recommend you:

  • Review the job advertisement
  • Research Transgrid’s values, mission, reports and projects
  • Follow Transgrid on social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram) and YouTube
  • Practice saying answers to common interview questions aloud to a friend or family member
  • Brush up on your technical knowledge relevant to the role
  • Practice using STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to respond to behavioural interview questions
  • Prepare thoughtful questions for the interviewers

On the day, ensure you arrive early and allow yourself time to find a park, get lost, or experience public transport delays.

To stand out during an assessment centre, maintain professionalism at all times and be kind to other candidates and staff, this includes dressing in a professional attire. Highlight any academic awards and leadership roles you have held, such as school captain or society leadership positions. You can prepare for the interview by watching YouTube videos from Transgrid and following Transgrid’s social media channels like LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook to stay updated and informed.

During this stage, authenticity is your greatest asset. Transgrid is looking for individuals who are genuine and true to themselves. During interviews and assessments, don’t try to be someone you’re not. Instead, focus on showcasing your unique strengths and experiences. Authenticity not only makes you more memorable but also helps you find a company culture that truly fits you.

At the end of the assessment centre, you will have the chance to ask any follow up questions you have about Transgrid. Ensure you research your questions before the assessment centre to ensure they are insightful and not easily found through Google. You may ask a question the assessors haven’t been asked before which will surely leave a lasting impression!

Finally, send a thank you note following your interview to show appreciation and professionalism.

Step 5: Pre-employment checks

After the assessment centre, a Transgrid recruiter will reach out to invite candidates who progress to the next stage to pre-employment checks. To stand out in this stage, ensure you answer the phone call or email in a professionally and complete the checks in a timely manner.

Conclusion

Standing out in the graduate recruitment process requires a combination of authenticity, preparation, and genuine interest in the company. By being yourself, showcasing your personality, and demonstrating your enthusiasm for the role, you can make a lasting impression and increase your chances of securing a position.

Good luck!
